What is HTTPS?

12/08/2022 | by Patrick Fischer, M.Sc., Founder & Data Scientist: FDS
HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is a protocol based on the widely used HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol). It provides secure communication between a web server and a web browser. It uses a combination of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol and the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to encrypt data that is exchanged between a server and a browser. This encryption provides an extra layer of security for the data being transferred between the server and the browser. HTTPS is especially important when sensitive data is to be transferred, such as in online banking.
