What is a lead story?

09/19/2023 | by Patrick Fischer, M.Sc., Founder & Data Scientist: FDS
In the field of journalism, the "lead" refers to the main news item or photo on the front page of a newspaper or magazine. The lead is usually designed to immediately grab the attention of readers and encourage them to buy the newspaper or open the magazine to find out more about the main news or topic. Often the lead is a large headline accompanied by an eye-catching picture or graphic to increase visual appeal. The purpose of the lead is to arouse the readership's curiosity and interest in the issue as a whole.
