What does a volunteer earn?

08/31/2023 | by Patrick Fischer, M.Sc., Founder & Data Scientist: FDS

The salary for media volunteers can vary widely depending on factors such as country, type of company (e.g. public broadcaster, private media company, publisher), location, type of media work (print, online, broadcast, television) and more.

In Germany, traineeships can often be found in public broadcasting or at large publishing houses. Compensation can vary here, but it is common for volunteers to receive reasonable compensation, which can be lower compared to other industries. The exact amount can vary widely, but on average it can range from around EUR 1,000 to EUR 2,500 per month.

In the USA, traineeships in the media sector can also be remunerated differently. There are positions that are unpaid, especially at smaller companies or in media internships that are viewed as valuable experience. For paid volunteers, salary can range from $25,000 to $50,000 per year depending on location, media type and company.

It is important to note that compensation levels are subject to change and vary from country to country. Even within the same country, salaries can vary greatly depending on the company and region. It is advisable to research specific job offers and, if necessary, to consult branch associations or trade unions for precise information.
