What does a press photographer have to consider?

08/25/2023 | by Patrick Fischer, M.Sc., Founder & Data Scientist: FDS

A press photographer must keep several things in mind in order to do their job successfully and ethically. Here are some important points that a press photographer should consider:

Journalistic ethics:

A press photographer should always uphold journalistic ethics. This includes respecting people's privacy, being honest in reporting, and avoiding manipulation or staging of photos to distort reality.

Legal Provisions: A press photographer must comply with laws and regulations regarding photography and publication. This includes being aware of copyrights, privacy rights, and possible restrictions on certain events or locations.

Safety: When working in dangerous situations or conflicts, a press photographer must keep in mind their own safety and the safety of those around them. This means wearing appropriate protective clothing and not putting yourself in unnecessary risk.

Objectivity: a press photographer should try to create objective images that reflect reality as accurately as possible. It is important not to manipulate or stage photos in order to promote a particular agenda.

Permits and Access: Depending on the event or location, it may be necessary to obtain permits or gain special access to take photos. A press photographer must respect these legal requirements.

Responsibility: A press photographer should be aware that their photos can have a powerful impact. They can portray people, events or situations in a certain light. It's important to carry this responsibility with care.

Equipment and technique: a press photographer should master his equipment and make sure that it is always ready and in good condition. Quick reaction times and mastery of camera technique are critical to capturing the right moment.

Context and captions: Photos should always be presented in the proper context, and captions need to be accurate and informative to aid viewer understanding.

Respect and sensitivity: in sensitive or tragic situations, a press photographer should proceed with respect and sensitivity, preserving the dignity of the people pictured.

Working with journalists: often press photographers work closely with journalists. It's important to communicate well and act as a team to ensure comprehensive coverage.

These points are designed to ensure that a press photographer works responsibly, ethically and professionally, and delivers high-quality images that can inform and raise public awareness.

ChatGPT in public relations - These application areas exist

08/22/2023 | by Patrick Fischer, M.Sc., Founder & Data Scientist: FDS

Chatbots like ChatGPT find various applications in public relations (also called public relations or PR). Here are some examples:

Customer communication: chatbots can be used on websites or social media to interact with customers, answer questions, offer support, and provide information about products or services.

Crisis communications: during a crisis or emergency, chatbots can be used to communicate quick and consistent information to the public. This can help curb rumors and maintain people's trust.

Media inquiries: chatbots can help journalists and members of the media quickly access press releases, fact sheets, or other relevant information.

Event announcements: Chatbots can be used to announce events, webinars, conferences, or press conferences and register interested attendees.

Content dissemination: Chatbots can help journalists and media representatives quickly access press releases, fact sheets, or other relevant information.

Content dissemination: chatbots can share content such as blog posts, articles or updates via social media to increase the reach and visibility of PR content.

Market research: chatbots can gather feedback from customers and target audiences to gain insights into their opinions, concerns and desires. This information can be used to adjust PR strategy.

Image cultivation: Chatbots can help promote a positive image of a company or organization by continuously sharing positive information and stories.

Personalization: by analyzing user behavior and interests, chatbots can provide personalized recommendations for content or products, deepening the relationship between the organization and its target audience.

Storytelling: Chatbots can tell stories or provide interactive experiences to increase audience engagement and deliver brand messages in an entertaining way.

Data collection and analytics: chatbots can collect valuable data about user behavior, interactions, and preferences that can be used in PR strategy and market research.

Follow-up and tracking: After press releases or articles are published, chatbots can be used to perform follow-ups to see how well certain messages are being received or if there are any queries. The chatbots can also be used to track the response of users to a press release or article.

It's important to note that while chatbots can provide many public relations benefits, they also need to be implemented carefully to ensure they provide relevant, useful, and authentic interactions.

How can I send press releases to press agencies?

08/22/2023 | by Patrick Fischer, M.Sc., Founder & Data Scientist: FDS

Sending press releases to press agencies is a common practice to get your news and information out to members of the media. Here are some steps that can help you do this:

Create a powerful press release: make sure your press release is well-structured and includes all the important information that is relevant to media representatives. A press release should include a clear headline, a summary of the main topic, the actual news text and contact information at the end.

Gather relevant press agencies: research which press agencies are relevant to your topic or industry. You can consider regional, national or international agencies, depending on who you want to reach.

Find the right contact information: make sure you identify the correct contact information for each press agency. This includes email addresses or specific contacts responsible for receiving press releases.

Personalize your approach: write a customized email to each contact and make sure you spell the recipient's name correctly. A personalized address increases the likelihood that your press release will be read.

Send your press release: Send your press releases by e-mail to the selected press agencies. Either include the news text directly in the email or add it as an attachment. Make sure your email is not too long and that the relevant information is clearly highlighted.

Follow up: A few days after sending your press release, you can send a short follow-up email to check if the agency received your release and if they have further interest in it.

Online releases: In addition to sending it out via email, you can also post your press release on your own website and social media. This will increase the chances that it will be found and picked up by journalists and bloggers. It is important that your press releases contain relevant and interesting information so that they attract the interest of press agencies.Be concise, clear and avoid overly promotional language. Also keep in mind that the decision to pick up a press release depends on the press agencies and is not guaranteed.

What are the best telephoto or zoom lenses for press photographers and photojournalists?

08/17/2023 | by Patrick Fischer, M.Sc., Founder & Data Scientist: FDS

For press photographers and photojournalists who often have to work in a variety of situations, zoom lenses tend to come in handy because they cover a wide range of focal lengths, making them versatile. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a good zoom lens:

Focal length: A zoom lens with a range from wide-angle to telephoto (such as 24-70mm or 24-105mm) is often a good choice. This will allow you to capture landscapes and group shots as well as details from a distance.

Luminosity: A lens with a large maximum aperture (e.g., f/2.8) has the advantage of performing well in low-light conditions and providing a shallow depth of field that blurs the background and highlights the subject.

Image stabilization: especially at longer focal lengths, image stabilization is helpful for avoiding camera shake and getting sharp images in low light.

Autofocus speed: Fast and accurate autofocus capabilities are important for capturing fast movement or rapidly changing situations.

Build quality and weather resistance: because press photographers often work in a variety of environments, rugged construction and weather resistance is an advantage.

Weight and size: Since photojournalists often carry their equipment all day, a balance of performance and portability is important.

Examples of popular zoom lenses that offer these features might include:

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM or Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR

Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS

It is important to note, however, that technology is constantly advancing, and there may be new models on the market by now that may better suit the current needs of press photographers. Therefore, I recommend seeking current reviews and recommendations from trusted photography websites or trade magazines to be up to date on available options.

Strong growth in the digital online advertising market in Germany

08/16/2023 | by Patrick Fischer, M.Sc., Founder & Data Scientist: FDS

The digital display advertising market in Germany recorded impressive growth of 24.7 percent in 2021 and an increase of more than one billion euros compared to the previous year. This is according to data from the Online-Vermarkterkreis (OVK) in the Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft (BVDW). The Corona pandemic acted as a catalyst for this development, driving digitization and increasing demand for digital advertising. In total, digital display advertising revenues amounted to EUR 5.12 billion in 2021.

The OVK's "Paid Content" trend study sheds light on users' willingness to pay for editorial content on the Internet. Only 21 percent of users resort to paid online content. Men (63 percent) and young users between 16 and 29 (27 percent) in particular show an above-average willingness to pay for such content.

The study also shows that paid subscriptions to e-papers and e-magazines are used most frequently, followed by paid access to news portals or online services and paid podcasts. The age structure influences these preferences: Older people aged 50 and over are more interested in e-papers or e-magazines, while younger users prefer podcasts.

Nevertheless, about 37 percent of non-payers believe news content should always be free. Those who would pay for editorial content are open to different access models. For example, about 66 percent could come to terms with agreeing to website cookies as an alternative to pay models, while about 54 percent would accept mandatory registration, provided they could continue to access content for free.

Steffen Bax, deputy chairman of the OVK, emphasizes that advertising revenues are still indispensable for financing journalistic content on the Internet. Both paying users and users of free content see advertising as an accepted method of supporting journalistic content online.

The OVK is committed to the development of a new online media platform.

The OVK continues to expect double-digit growth in the digital display advertising market despite the pandemic effects fading. For 2022, they forecast growth of 11.8 percent to more than EUR 5.7 billion. Programmatic advertising is expected to exceed the 4 billion mark and stabilize at a level of 71 percent. Moving image advertising will also generate revenues of EUR 2.1 billion in 2022. In-page advertising will remain dominant, accounting for 63 percent of revenues.
