Investigation of the Body Mass Index in Germany by 2017: An Analysis by Gender and Age Groups

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a frequently used measure for evaluating body weight in relation to height. It allows for assessing the health status of a population with regards to underweight, normal weight, and obesity (severe overweight). An up-to-date analysis of the BMI in Germany up to the year 2017 provides valuable insights into weight classifications and how they relate to factors such as gender, marital status, and age groups.

The results indicate that the BMI varies across different age groups and genders, considering weight categories of underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity.

In 2017, the proportion of individuals with normal weight (BMI between 18.5 and 25 kg/m²) was 53.6 percent in total. This showed a slight decrease in normal weight compared to 2013 (54.1 percent). Overweight (BMI between 25 and 30 kg/m²) was observed in 21.3 percent of the population, while 25.1 percent were affected by obesity (BMI of 30 kg/m² or more). These values remained relatively stable compared to 2013.

Upon closer examination by age groups, it becomes evident that young adults aged 18 to under 20 had a high proportion of normal weight (75.2 percent). With increasing age, the percentage of overweight and obesity steadily rises, with this trend leveling off in individuals above 70 years. Among those aged 75 and older, the proportion of individuals with normal weight (43.9 percent) is relatively lower, while obesity (48.0 percent) is more prevalent.

Gender differences in BMI are also significant. In 2017, more men (35.1 percent) were overweight compared to women (30.6 percent). Obesity was more pronounced in men (20.5 percent) than in women (18.1 percent). Overall, women had a slightly higher prevalence of normal weight (56.9 percent) compared to men (53.6 percent).

An analysis based on marital status revealed that married individuals had a higher proportion of normal weight (53.6 percent compared to 51.5 percent) and a lower proportion of obesity (19.4 percent compared to 21.0 percent) compared to unmarried individuals.

Overall, this study illustrates that while the BMI remained largely stable in Germany, it varies with age, gender, and marital status. The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in older age groups and among married individuals underscores the importance of prevention measures targeting different population segments to minimize health risks and promote awareness of a healthy lifestyle.

Upon closer examination of the data, several particularly noteworthy trends emerge:

  • Age Groups and Weight Classification: As age increases, the proportion of individuals with overweight and obesity rises, particularly among women around the age of 55.
  • Gender Differences: There are distinct differences between genders, both in terms of overweight and obesity.
  • Temporal Development: Between 2013 and 2017, the proportion of individuals with overweight and obesity increased.
  • Age Groups with Low Proportion of Normal Weight: Particularly striking is the age group of women between 60 and 70 years, where the proportion of individuals with normal weight is significantly lower.
  • Youthful Adults: In the age group of young adults, an increase in the proportion of individuals with obesity is observed.
  • Older Age Groups: In older age groups, the proportion of individuals with overweight and obesity rises.

These trends could be attributed to various factors, including changing lifestyles, dietary habits, and potentially societal influences.

Ifo Business Climate Index Continues to Fall: German Economy Remains in a Dry Period

The economic mood in Germany has deteriorated again, as shown by the latest results of the ifo business surveys in August. The ifo Business Climate Index, a key indicator of the country's economic development, fell to 85.7 points. This marks the fourth consecutive decline and highlights the continuing uncertainty in the boardrooms of German companies.

The downward movement of the business climate index signals a further deterioration in economic conditions compared with the previous month. In July, the index still stood at 87.4 points. Of particular concern is that the assessment of the current business situation has reached its lowest level since August 2020. This indicates an already tense economic situation that has steadily worsened over the course of the year.

Company expectations for the coming months have also become significantly more pessimistic. German companies are looking to the future with skepticism, indicating ongoing challenges and uncertainties. The lack of new orders is cited by many companies as one of the main reasons for this pessimistic outlook.

A closer look at the various sectors of the economy shows that uncertainty is being felt in several sectors. In manufacturing, the business climate index has fallen, due in particular to companies' dissatisfaction with current business. This is also reflected in the negative figures for the current business situation indicator, which slipped into negative territory for the first time since October 2020.

The service sector also recorded a noticeable cooling of the business climate. Service companies are less satisfied with their current situation and expect it to deteriorate further. This weakness is also affecting the transportation and logistics sector, which is also being impacted by industrial uncertainty.

The retail sector is also seeing a decline in business confidence. Retailers are taking a more negative view of their current situation and are also increasingly skeptical about future developments.

Even the construction sector, long considered relatively stable, is experiencing a downturn in the business climate index. Companies are expressing more dissatisfaction with their current business and are increasingly pessimistic about the months ahead.

Clemens Fuest, President of the Ifo Institute, comments on these developments: "The continued deterioration in the business climate signals that the German economy remains in a phase of uncertainty and weakness. The ongoing lean period poses major challenges for companies and may require targeted measures to stabilize them."

The ifo Business Cycle Clock visualizes this uncertainty in a four-quadrant scheme that illustrates the cyclical relationship between the business situation and business expectations. This analysis shows that the German economy is currently stuck in the "cooling quadrant," which indicates a deteriorating business situation combined with expectations that are still above average.

Overall, the current figures of the ifo Business Climate Index highlight the ongoing challenges facing the German economy. Uncertainty in executive suites is reflected in negative expectations and reduced satisfaction with the current business situation. It remains to be seen if and when the economic climate will change for the better again.

Jimdo-ifo Index for July 2023: Business climate for the self-employed continues to deteriorate - need for action by policymakers

The business climate index for the self-employed has deteriorated again in July 2023, and there are signs that there is an urgent need for action on the part of policymakers. The ifo Institute released the latest figures, which indicate that the business climate among the self-employed has continued to decline. Both the current business situation and future expectations were assessed more negatively by respondents. The index for solo and micro entrepreneurs fell by 3.8 to -16.4, while for the economy as a whole it fell by 2.8 to -9.1.

The current trend is reminiscent of the lowest points in recent years. Compared to the low point in October 2022, the assessment of the business situation for solo and micro entrepreneurs has hardly improved. This could be an alarm signal for policymakers, who now need to see themselves in an active role.

Andreas Lutz, chairman of the board of the Association of Founders and Self-Employed People Germany (VGSD), stressed the urgency of positive measures to revive the business climate. The idea of a government commissioner for solo self-employed was discussed as a way to promote the interests of this group and take immediate relief measures.

A positive turnaround is evident in the services sector, which has performed relatively positively in the index since February 2022. However, this sector has also lost ground in recent months. Index scores for the services sector have fallen sharply, and pessimism about future business prospects has increased. This pattern is also evident in various industries within the services sector.

The VGSD, whose members are mostly active in the service sector, emphasizes the diversity of industries in this sector. The different developments in the individual industries highlight the need to pay closer attention to the specific trends and challenges in each sector.

Jimdo Info Index: Business Climate for June 2023 Considerably Dampened - Solo and Micro Entrepreneurs Cautiously Pessimistic

Business optimism among self-employed and small business owners deteriorated for the third straight month in June 2023, the latest Jimdo Ifo Index shows. The results of this monthly survey leave no room for doubt: sentiment in the sector has continued to deteriorate, which should prompt a call for government action.

According to Katrin Demmelhuber, an expert at the Ifo Institute, the business climate among the self-employed deteriorated worryingly in June. This was characterized by two main factors: On the one hand, the respondents assessed the current situation increasingly negatively compared to the previous months. On the other hand, expectations regarding future business development were even more pessimistic than they had been in the current year. This deterioration follows a period of recovery that began after the energy crisis bottomed out in October 2022. Hopes that the fall in April was only temporary were finally dashed. The negative trend continued in May and is now continuing.

The Jimdo Ifo Index shows that the business climate for the self-employed fell a further 4.0 points in June and is now at minus 12.6 points. In the economy as a whole, the value has fallen even more significantly, namely by 5.5 points, and is now minus 6.6 points. Demmelhuber notes that the indicators for climate and expectations in the overall economy have also fallen significantly. However, the business situation in this sector was still rated as favourable.

One alarming aspect is the declining mood among the solo self-employed and micro-entrepreneurs. In June they rated their business situation clearly negative for the first time this year. The corresponding value is minus 2.6 points, compared to minus 0.4 points in the previous month. This is in sharp contrast to the overall economy, which is still in positive territory at 13.5 but down 2.5 points from May's 16.0.

A possible reason for this development could be the slowly decreasing inflation, which leads to a decreasing pressure on prices. Price expectations have been falling for months. Among the self-employed, 15.6 percent of respondents say they are considering price increases, compared to 16.3 percent for the economy as a whole. In spring 2022, these values ​​still reached peak values ​​of 61.4 (overall economy) and 54.7 (self-employed).

It is important to view the ongoing negative sentiment in the context of the declining number of founders and the self-employed. The number of start-ups in Germany has fallen by two-thirds since 2002, and the proportion of self-employed people in the workforce has fallen by more than 30 percent since 2012. Andreas Lutz, Chairman of the Association of Founders and Self-Employed Germany (VGSD), comments on this development and emphasizes the need for measures on the part of the federal government to reverse this trend. Lutz calls for the establishment of contact persons in parties and ministries who are specifically dedicated to the concerns of the solo self-employed and who can build up the necessary expertise to make well-founded decisions.
